Flatten a PDF Online — Remove Form Fields for Free

Flattening turns a fillable PDF into a plain one. The boxes, checkboxes and dropdowns stop being editable, and whatever they were showing is printed onto the page instead. Nothing moves, and nothing is redrawn.
Use it to lock answers into a form before you send it, or to prepare a packet you assembled from several documents so it can be read as one.

How to flatten a PDF:

  • 1 Upload any PDF file (up to 10 MB).
  • 2 Every form field is merged into the page it sits on.
  • 3 The text stays selectable and the layout is untouched.
  • 4 Download the flattened copy. Your original is left alone.

This tool is completely free. Flatten unlimited PDFs with no watermark and no hidden costs.

Your PDF is processed in memory and immediately discarded — we never store or share uploaded files.

Flattened. {{ flat.results.fieldsRemoved }} form fields merged into the page. Done. This PDF had no fillable fields, so there was nothing to merge.

Upload the flattened copy before you upload the original. If the original is already in your workspace we will recognise the document and reuse the fields it already has, which is usually not what you want when the point of flattening was to have every page read again. Delete the earlier form first.

What does flattening a PDF do?

A fillable PDF keeps two things in the same file: the printed page, and a layer of interactive widgets sitting on top of it — the text boxes you type into, the checkboxes you tick, the dropdowns you pick from. Flattening removes that second layer and draws whatever it was displaying directly onto the page underneath.

The result looks the same and reads the same. Text stays selectable and searchable, the page count does not change, and nothing is turned into a picture. What changes is that the document can no longer be edited through its form fields — which is how you make a PDF not editable without turning it into an image or password-protecting it.

When flattening is the right move

  • Locking a completed form. Once flattened, the answers cannot be altered by opening the file and typing over them.
  • Fixing a form that renders differently everywhere. Field appearance depends on the viewer. Flattened content does not.
  • Preparing an assembled packet. If you built one PDF out of several — some pages fillable, some not — flattening makes the whole packet consistent so it can be processed as a single document rather than as a fillable form with dead pages attached.

Flatten or unflatten?

These are opposite jobs and it is worth being sure which one you want. Flattening takes a PDF you can type into and makes it fixed. That is this page. Unflattening takes a PDF that is already fixed — printed, scanned or previously flattened — and gives it fields you can type into again.

Strictly speaking a flattened PDF cannot be un-flattened, because the original fields are gone rather than hidden. What you can do is detect where the answers belong and build new fields there, which for most people is the same thing in practice. Our free tool for turning a flat PDF into a fillable form does exactly that.

One thing to check first

If a field has no visible border and sits on empty space, the only thing marking it was the widget itself, and flattening leaves that spot blank. Most real forms print a line or a box under every field, so this is uncommon — but it is worth opening the flattened copy and confirming the page still shows where the answers go.

Frequently asked questions

What does flattening a PDF do?

It merges the interactive form layer into the printed page. The document keeps its appearance, its text and its page count, but the fields can no longer be edited.

Will flattening change how my document looks?

No. Nothing is moved, rescaled or converted to an image, and the text stays selectable and searchable. The one thing that disappears is the highlight your PDF viewer draws around editable fields, because there are no longer any editable fields.

Does it keep the answers already typed into the form?

Yes. Anything the fields were showing is printed onto the page as part of flattening, which is what makes flattening a way to lock a completed form before sending it.

Why would I flatten a PDF before uploading it to Instafill?

Because a document that is only partly fillable is read as a fillable form, and the pages without fields are left as they are. Flattening removes that ambiguity: the whole packet arrives as a plain document, so every page is examined and offered fields.

I combined a fillable form with printed pages. Why do only some pages fill?

Because the fillable part makes the file count as a fillable form, and the printed pages are then left untouched. Flatten the combined file first and upload that instead, and the printed pages will be read along with the rest.

I already uploaded this document. Will flattening it help?

Delete the earlier upload first. We recognise documents we have already seen and reuse the fields we built for them, so a flattened copy of something already in your workspace will be matched to the old version instead of being read afresh.

Is my file stored?

No. The PDF is processed in memory and discarded as soon as the flattened copy is sent back to you.

Can you unflatten a PDF?

Not literally. Flattening removes the fields rather than hiding them, so there is nothing left to restore. What you can do instead is have the blanks detected afresh and new fields built where the answers belong, which for most purposes amounts to the same thing. Our free tool for turning a flat PDF into a fillable form does that for any flattened, printed or scanned document.

How do I flatten a PDF for free?

Select or drop your file above. It is flattened in memory and handed straight back — no watermark, no page limit and no charge. Files are never stored.
