How Operation Veterans Edge fills complex VA DBQs with near-perfect accuracy

Operation Veterans Edge is a veteran-led coaching organization in the United States that supports veterans with their disability claims. Those claims rest on the VA's Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) for the back (thoracolumbar spine), neck (cervical spine), hip and thigh, and knee and lower leg: 40+ forms the organization needed to automate. With every DBQ's fields mapped and reviewable in Instafill.ai, the AI now fills them with near-perfect accuracy.

The challenge

A DBQ goes deep: diagnoses, medical history, range of motion and functional limitations, written as exact range-of-motion measurements, ICD codes, dates and anatomical detail. On forms like the Knee and Lower Leg DBQ, the left and right sides sit next to each other with identical fields, and left leg pain has to land on the left side, not the right. A "Yes" to a question such as whether the veteran has flare-ups calls for a written explanation in a separate long-text field, and the two have to be filled together. The templates themselves keep changing.

Filling was inconsistent on exactly those structures. The team also had no way to see or export the list of fields Instafill.ai had detected on an uploaded form. Operation Veterans Edge prepares veterans' unstructured health information with other AI tools before a form is filled, and that pipeline needed to know every field. Handling the forms by hand slowed down every claim, and an error on a DBQ can delay a benefit decision by months.

The solution

Instafill.ai worked with the team directly and turned on the field editor for reviewing every detected field on their account. It lists every field the AI found on a DBQ, shows how the AI read the form's structure, and lets the team review each field and correct it by hand.

The field editor also lets the team give a group of related fields its own custom instructions for that group, on top of editing single fields.

The Instafill.ai team helped set up the forms too, working from the DBQs in the Veterans Benefits Administration's public DBQ library rather than from veterans' records. That made targeted improvements to the field mapping and the fill accuracy possible without anyone at Instafill.ai touching the organization's sensitive client data.

The results

With the fields mapped and visible, Operation Veterans Edge fills its complex DBQs with near-perfect accuracy and spends less time on manual data entry and form preparation, which speeds up each claim.

The organization can take on more veterans' claims without lowering its standard of service or compliance. Responsive support and product changes made for its workflow left the team more confident in what comes out of each fill.
